New Law Requires Training to Prevent Workplace Violence

Commissionaires Great Lakes offers one-day compliance workshop

April 1, 2010, Toronto, ON – A new one-day workshop offered by Commissionaires Great Lakes helps businesses understand, and comply with, Bill 168, provincial labour legislation comes into effect in June, 2010. The new Ontario law imposes significant new demands on employers to protect their employees from workplace violence and harassment. Specifically, the new law requires employers to develop new policies and procedures relating to the investigation and reporting of incidents of workplace violence. Before developing such a program, employers are also obliged to complete a risk assessment of violence hazards that may arise in the workplace.

"Ensuring that employees are well-trained and in compliance with Bill 168 will put employers in the strongest position to prevent workplace violence and harassment," commented Jim Watts, CEO of Commissionaires Great Lakes. "It will also ensure that Ministry of Labour inspections are passed, and related non-compliance fines are avoided."

The goal of the Commissionaires Great Lakes workshop is to inform employers of their compliance responsibilities under Bill 168. The course will cover:

  • Understanding and managing roles and responsibilities under Bill 168;
  • Risk assessments and how they are carried out;
  • Developing a comprehensive workplace violence prevention program including security policies, procedures and practices;
  • Strategies to maintain proper compliance with Bill 168;
  • Information and instruction on preventing workplace violence and harassment for employees.

This interactive workshop is delivered by Commissionaires' subject matter experts, who have achieved the Certified Protection Professional (CPP) accreditation.

The workshop, Protecting Your People: Risk Assessment and Compliance for Workplace Violence and Harassment, can be delivered in the workplace or at one of the Commissionaires Great Lakes training centres located in Toronto, Barrie, London, or Sarnia.
